Suzuki Cello School Volume 1 - Book Review

I have been playing cello for almost 7 yearsand I think that this is the best cello book there is, 10 full books of great songs. I am currently on book 7 and it is very hard, but I still like it. The only bad thing that I have ever found is that the books are somewhat flimsy and fall apart easily by the time you have finished it (it takes me about a year a book).

Boston Cello Stand Review

I had never used a stand without a neck support, and I really thought I might regret trying this one out.But it was the best price of any stand, and looks better/takes less visual room because it doesn't have the neck support and since I wanted to put it in a tight corner, I decided to try it.It does a great job and looks good too--you don't even see the stand at all.It is very steady and even my toddler has not managed to knock it over despite playing with the cello in the stand frequently.I would definitely recommend this stand to anyone on a budget, who has tight space to put instruments in, or looking for a great "floating" effect with no visual clunkiness to show off their instrument.It is a safe and steady stand that I feel confident in to protect a nice instrument. I will probably look for and purchase more stands like this in the future, even if price isn't a factor anymore.

Lennon and McCartney Solos: for Cello (Instrumental Folio) [Paperback] Review

This is the best Beatles fake book for violin I own. It seems like many books change the key or the notation too much. Or, the songs are 5 pages long, with lots of rests. These are solos, so most songs fit. At first I thought it didn't have my favorite songs, but I found myself enjoying everything in the book.

The sheet music is easy to read. It's simple, but not too simplified. Most are in the keys of A, D and G. Second+ year beginners will have no trouble, and advanced players will have fun. There are enough notes to sound like the real thing, but not so much embellishment that it leaves nothing to interpretation. I would have liked a couple of doublestops or slides noted, but I should be able to work those out myself.

What a great play-along CD!I believe these are real preformers! I hate buying play-alongs to only to get lifeless synth-midi garbage that sounds awful. That's no fun at all.

The melody is on the right channel can be turned off if you want just the backup.I can't tell you how rare and valuable that is for play-alongs.Of course, you can tune out the backup and play with just the melody.

The melody is played by a piano, not a violin, but it sounds good.The backup has a great drum kit that sounds a lot like Ringo, and at times even a full string section.I enjoyed listening to it while doing dishes.The performances sound real and not mechanical. They have feeling. The timing is pretty close to the original - not too slow or too fast.

For less than $10 I got hours and hours of fun.

Jade L'Opera JADE Rosin for Violin, Viola, and Cello Review

My suggestions to parents who have kids who play violin:
1.as they get older, get them a good quality instrument.Rent one, don't buy one - the rentals are so much better quality than what you'd probably budget for. I am currently renting a better-quality instrument than I played as a teen - as a child I guess it doesn't matter, but as I got older, a better instrument would have been nice.
2. get them a good quality rosin.As an adult I have come to appreciate spending alittle more money for things that are worth it - and this rosin is one of them...to a certain point.I got tis exact rosin for $10.86 and although that is about 10x more than I'd have ever expected to pay for rosin, I think the results are well-worth it.(although after I posted my raving review the price hovered at $16-$17 for it, which i think is HORRIBLE.I'm morally opposed to buying more of this rosin until the prices goes back down!!!!
3. get them a couple private lessons from a teacher who cares.and believes in them.

This is why I like this rosin:
1. The higher quality makes the bow stick better to the strings
2.overall it helped produce a nicer tone ( I changed just the rosin, not the violin.I used the regular free rosin that the rental company gave me for a little while, then decided to try this rosin.so only the rosin has changed, not the quality of the violin)

However:
1. It does give off a lot of dust - i don't know if this amount is typical of higher-quality rosins, but I find myself cleaning more off my strings and violin at the end of my sessions now.
2. I do find that it wears off surprisingly quickly.Let's say I practice a little over an hour, I might re-apply once or twice.I can't remember that clearly but I think when I was younger and playing in the orchestra, I don't know that I even re-applied the rosin during a performance, which would be about that same amount of time.But 1)maybe my memory fails me and 2) maybe the lesser the quailty rosin the more it sticks to the bow and not the strings or 3) maybe I was just not that into playing that I didn't care enough to re-apply.

Overall: This rosin impressed me.I really think it changed the sound that was coming out of the instrument.It inspired me to start recording myself and send to my parents, who were thrilled that all those years of pestering me to 'practice my violin' have finally come to fruition.

Cello Solos EFS 40 [Paperback] Review

I am an adult intermediate level cello student (appr. early HS equivalent).I bought this book for fun, and now my teacher assigns me a piece each week to work on.It is refreshing to actually work on lyrical solo pieces to take a break from the scales and etudes.

Although these seem like a break from the etudes, you still have lots of building and learning material here.They make shifting exercises fun for example.

Plus, it comes with a full piano accompaniement that is so useful for students to play with to check intonation.

My teacher also uses the book to play along on the cello for accompaniement for the same purpose (works really well for the Handel Largo since the bass line in the piano score functions as continuo part for a second cello).Great tunes from opera, symphony, etc.This is a fun book to play from.

One downside is the suggested fingerings.While most make sense, some are sort of silly in the goal to avoid the dreaded random open string.My teacher changes the fingerings when she assigns me a new piece.However, anyone on a level to play these pieces will recognize there are alternative fingerings and can adapt to their own use.

Complete Suites for Unaccompanied Cello and Sonatas for Viola Da Gamba [Paperback] Review

This is a clean, inexpensive copy of the Bach Gesselschaft edition, much less error prone than some of the the Gesselschafts. The only real problem here is the peverse clef choice. The cello parts are written with bass clef, occasionally using an alto clef when it goes up high, while the gamba sonatas use bass clef with the tenor clef for high parts. This is opposite of standard practices. As a viol player, I can read the cello parts with no problem (apart from the occasional drop below the range), but the tenor clef is completely confusing. There are alternative versions of the cello suites in the appendix with tenor, but the viol player is out of luck.

Glaesel Cello Practice Mute Review

When i first heard about the book I was a bit skeptical due to the fact there are many books that say they will help you how to read music. I feel that the main purpose of the book is to teach how to sight read, which is also good but it takes a lot of effort to do so. The good thing about the book is that it includes the grand scale and it gives tiny illustrations on which string the note is located. I mainly use the book to practice as warm ups and it has improved my reading drastically. Essential Elements 2000 for Strings Plus DVD: Cello (Essential Elements for Strings) [Paperback] Review

I started learning to play the cello at the age of 40. I came into it knowing *nothing* about music or musical instrumets. I knew how to listen to music, but couldn't play it, read it, or make it, and I was completely unfamiliar with the various parts of a cello.

While obviously written for children (my favorite line: page 4 "Wait quietly for your teacher to tune your instrument"), this book is perfect for beginning adult students as well. I learned to identify the parts of the instrument, how to hold it while playing, fingering techniques, and how to properly hold and use the bow (more challenging than it looks). The book does a very good job of introducing the "language" of music to those who have no previous experience with time signatures, clef signs, key signatures, eighth notes and half notes, half steps and whole steps, etc. And if you couldn't sight read music before, you certainly will get it while working with this book.

If you already have some musical training, this book may very well be too basic for you. If you are like me, an *absolute* beginner, I recommend this book with enthusiasm. As some wise person once said, it's okay to begin at the beginning. This book is the perfect companion as you start your musical journey!

I bought this cello about 18 months ago. I've been a musician for over 20 years, but this is my first cello. Since I didn't know if the instrument would be right for me I decided to go inexpensive. The fact that it came with a second set of strings, "hard" foam case, soft case, stand, rosin and a bow, I thought this was quite a steal.

You get what you pay for, it's true. This is no orchestra instrument by any means. But for a beginner it is a heck of a deal. If mine broke I'd either buy this one again or one of the step up models (CCO-400 or 500 series) as I probably wouldn't allow myself to spend over 1k on any other student model, at least until I'm only using it for studying and doing some home recording.

What a gorgeous cello! Nice "practice" cello---but it immediately needed new strings, and the pegs won't hold. We're still working on it and after new strings plus some peg dope (thank you Sharmusic.com), the pegs still won't hold the tuned strings. Once we get that settled, tho, it ought to play very nicely.

Out of the box this cellow was unpleasant sounding. Took it to a luthier, he did the following:
1- Shaved the knot
2- Adjusted sound post
3- Moved the tail piece 1" down and removed 3 fine tuners (C, G, and D)
4- Replaced the strings with Helicores
The results were amazing. It sounds good now. It is mellow with a hint of spark. It cost about $110 extra and it was all worth it. The final cost was around $560 which is a good price considering the nice bow, stand, and the extra hard case.
