Artino Cello Practice Mute Review

my cello teacher higher recommends this mute. He said its one of the best he has come across.For me it mutes the strings evenly, clamps on the bridge securely.It just turns the volume down by half which is good because I live in an apartment.However, if I want to practice in the middle of the night, I think my neighbours can still hear me.

Cello Stool: adjustable from 13" to 17" Review

It's a handy little stool. One that is great for people who need to not sit so high off of the ground. It's not the most durable. I use it for playing guitar, though and tend to move quite a bit while I'm playing. Movement causes the thumbscrew to loosen and the seat swivels by the end of a couple of songs - nothing dangerous. Given that the seating platform is cardboard, I doubt it will last for long. It's inexpensive for the quality. The company ships promptly.

Sherman Cello Rosin Review

I wasn't very impressed with this rosin... The wooden holder has a habit of catching some hairs and breaking them... I honestly just ended up using this particular piece of rosin to cake up my pegs so they stick better... It's good for that much at least... All rosin, even good rosin is cheap, I'd recommend buying something better, and in a round cake.

The Original Dampit Cello Humidifier Review

Great way to keep my cello at a good humidity level during the dry winter months. I have had no problems with it, I just make sure I squeeze out all excess water and dry the outside very well with a paper towel. I make sure that I store the instrument in a fashion that prevents the humidifier from touching the wood on the inside to prevent any wicking of the water onto the wood. It has worked very well for me, but just don't tell my luthier.......he highly disapproves of this product......humidify the room not the instrument is his motto.

Ultimate Beginner Series, Cello Review

I bought this DVD for my wife as she is just learning how to play the cello.I wasn't sure what to expect from the DVD as there were no reviews on it yet.I figured I would give it a try.
The dvd is aimed toward those who have NEVER had a lesson.The chapters cover parts of the cello, how to hold the cello, how to hold the bow, tuning the cello, and playing the scales.
I felt the instruction was a bit too basic.It covered what we learned in our very first cello lesson with our instructor.I was expecting more from the dvd, like how to play vibratto, or how to play songs such as what is taught in the Suzuki training books.The only "song" they play is the scales (A-B-C-D, etc).
The lady that plays the cello is obviously uncomfortable being in front of the camera, but I think I would be too!:)She is an incredible celloist, and some of the best "pieces" of the dvd are the little interludes where she plays the cello between chapters.
I felt some of the chapters could have been longer and more informative.For example, in the "Tuning the Cello" chapter, she explains how to tune the cello.She then talks about another way to tune the cello using "reverberation", but never shows how it works and how to tune the cello that way.
There are some added bonuses to the dvd, such as a guy explaining "octaves" on a piano.They were kind of handy, but would have liked more focus on the cello.
I would recommend this dvd to those who are interested in getting a cello, or have just bought one.For those of you who have already had a few cello lessons, this dvd will be way to basic for you.
I would really like to see another one created for the intermediate player.Such as the student who has played for awhile, but wants to learn more about the cello and how to play more interesting songs.

Cello Solos EFS 40 [Paperback] Review

I am an adult intermediate level cello student (appr. early HS equivalent).I bought this book for fun, and now my teacher assigns me a piece each week to work on.It is refreshing to actually work on lyrical solo pieces to take a break from the scales and etudes.

Although these seem like a break from the etudes, you still have lots of building and learning material here.They make shifting exercises fun for example.

Plus, it comes with a full piano accompaniement that is so useful for students to play with to check intonation.

My teacher also uses the book to play along on the cello for accompaniement for the same purpose (works really well for the Handel Largo since the bass line in the piano score functions as continuo part for a second cello).Great tunes from opera, symphony, etc.This is a fun book to play from.

One downside is the suggested fingerings.While most make sense, some are sort of silly in the goal to avoid the dreaded random open string.My teacher changes the fingerings when she assigns me a new piece.However, anyone on a level to play these pieces will recognize there are alternative fingerings and can adapt to their own use.

This is a very useful and intelligent book for beginning cellists. There is a wealth of information about cello technique, and an abundance of musical and even physical exercises (along with detailed instructions on how to read music). I am very glad I bought this book -- it's a gem.
